On Our Radar: NewDad
In the dynamic world of indie music, a band from Galway, Ireland, has been making waves and capturing the hearts of music enthusiasts and tastemakers alike. NewDad, a quartet comprised of Julie Dawson, Áindle O'Beirn, Fiachra Parslow, and Sean O'Dowd, has been crafting a sound hauntingly dreamy with incandescent melodies.
NewDad introduced themselves to the world with their self-released debut “How” in 2020 and have since achieved two critically-acclaimed EPs, opened for huge artists like Inhaler and Wet Leg, and grown a loyal following. This debut, plus 2021 EP “Waves”, showcased their unique sonic identity, blending shimmering guitar riffs with Julie Dawson's ethereal vocals; setting the foundations for even bigger things to come…
Fast forward to 2023, and NewDad have finally shared the news fans have been waiting for: the release of debut album “MADRA”, out January 2024. The 11-track album continues the band’s unique musical talent and is a testament to Dawson’s vast creative growth; honing in on themes she’s not afraid to explore, like shame, guilt and self-sabotage. MADRA symbolises a safe space for self-reflection and growth, just as the band and Dawson have done through their music over the years.
On the new album, Dawson commented: “I want people to listen and relate and feel like it can help them,” she smiles. “Because, honestly, it’s helped me a lot.”
In a constantly evolving music landscape, NewDad stands out as an indie gem waiting to be discovered. Their ability to create a dreamlike sonic atmosphere and pair it with emotionally charged lyrics is something special. As their debut album approaches, you have the opportunity to join their musical journey from the very beginning and experience one unforgettable band on the brink of explosion.
