About The Deaf Institute
Reopened in 2008 after a period of dereliction, The Deaf Institute has become a staple venue of the Manchester nightlife scene.
The independent bar and venue - formerly Manchester’s Adult Deaf and Dumb Institute, as is still inscribed in stone above the entrance – was designed by John Lowe in 1878 and sits in the heart of the Manchester Metropolitan University Campus, located off Oxford Road.
Spread across three floors, the café bar and music hall boast three individual bars, a kitchen and a roof terrace. The main bar comprises of a mix of comfy leather booths and large sharing tables, perfect for group socialising. Throughout the day, a delicious menu of breakfast and brunch-inspired food is served, which changes to burgers in the evenings - and is served alongside a variety of craft beers and local ales.
Keeping much of the original architecture and feel, the first-floor music hall plays host to an eclectic line-up of live gigs, club nights and comedy showcases at circa 260 cap. The ballroom is adorned with velvet curtains, tiered seating and features a domed ceiling and a massive mirror ball. Previous acts who’ve performed include The xx, Jarvis Cocker, Florence + the Machine, Johnny Marr, Caribou, Metronomy, Edwyn Collins, Jungle and more. Finally, from club nights to late-night schmoozing, the plush basement bar is the perfect place to party.
Like its sister venue Gorilla, The Deaf Institute faced permanent closure in 2020. After a deal was agreed between venue group Tokyo Industries and former owners Mission Mars, both The Deaf Institute and Gorilla were saved.
The locations have stayed closed since the acquisition due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but all is not lost… fans of the venues – who’ve gone digital in the interim by launching Gorilla TV – can stream and watch interviews, videos and live sets broadcast from both, including guests like The Cribs, Badly Drawn Boy and more.
